Headstone cost: what a grave marker really runs in 2026

Headstones and grave markers cost anywhere from $200 to $10,000. Here's what drives the price, the cemetery fees to watch for, and how to buy one without overpaying.

A headstone is often the last funeral expense a family handles, sometimes months after the burial. Prices swing enormously depending on type, material, and the cemetery's rules — so it pays to know what you're looking at before you order.

What headstones cost

  • Flat / flush markers (level with the ground): roughly $200–$1,500. The most affordable, and what many “memorial park” cemeteries require.
  • Upright headstones (the classic standing monument): $1,000–$3,000 for granite, more for larger or premium stone.
  • Custom monuments, statues, or family markers: $5,000–$10,000+.

What drives the price

Material is the biggest factor — granite and bronze are standard; marble weathers faster and costs more to maintain. After that: size, whether it's flat or upright, the amount and complexity of engraving, any photos or emblems, and the concrete foundation the marker sits on.

The cemetery fees to watch for

The stone itself is only part of the bill. Cemeteries almost always charge a setting or installation fee($300–$1,000+) to place the marker, and many restrict what you're allowed to install — flat-only sections are common. Some try to require you to buy the marker through them; in most cases you're free to buy elsewhere and pay only their setting fee. Ask for the cemetery's rules and fees in writing before you order anything.

How to buy without overpaying

Just like caskets, headstones are often cheaper from an independent monument dealer or online retailer than from the cemetery or funeral home. Get two or three quotes for the same stone and engraving, and confirm the total includes the foundation and setting. Because the ground needs time to settle, markers are frequently installed a few months after burial — so there's usually no need to rush the decision.
